Narendra Modi - An Electrodynamic Speaker
Narendra Modi is a
politician who can talk brilliantly. Better than any of his political
opponents. His eloquence is going to be his key weapon in 2014 election.
Whenever he speaks he makes a live connection with his audience. Moreover, he speaks the language of the
masses - Hindi (and Gujarati when he is in his state). Hindi is the language
most of us are brought up with. The emotional connection Modi establishes with
people is precisely because he speaks the language of our dreams, our feelings
and emotions.
Art of public speaking is a major ingredient of political
life. Modi is not just dramatic but also persuasive. His speeches are well structured
and extempore. As the Roman politician Cicero said centuries ago, ‘There was no
hope of gaining office if you couldn’t speak well’. Public speaking and public
listening is part of a democracy like India where people look up to their
leaders. An astute public knows the difference between being persuaded and
being cajoled, inspired or misdirected.
What is then the trick
of Mr Modi’s trade ? - Repetition of achievements of his state, a good start
and finish. In between he infuses wiser ways of governing, peppered with nationalism
and love for mother earth. Above all,
like a good speaker, he is playing himself
- no pretentions, strong and dependable. He weaves a strong sense of
inclusion. For instance while speaking to the elite women entrepreneurs he gave
examples of ordinary grass root level business women, while talking to
privileged students he talked about the farmers and now in the election rallies
everyone is included. Funny enough, the not so analytical media still believes
that Modi is the most divisive figure in Indian politics (due to 2002 post
Godra riots in state of Gujarat). The perception fast disappearing in minds of
public due to Modi’s all inclusive agenda.
Finally, he has projected an ideal and more and more people
are pinning their hopes on him. He makes an instant connection with his
audience and has managed to train his listeners. Now a seasoned politician, who does not
stick to one way preaching, but often engages public with ‘call and response’,
Although he is prone
to exaggeration yet without a doubt he has captured the energy of this restless
nation.
As for his personality he is duty bound, worrisome for his
nation, living entirely on practical level. No room for dreams and
abstractions. He is full of grace and charm perhaps with a bit of vanity. In
the end a loner with excellent oratory skills. He is a strong, decisive leader,
three time successful Chief Minister, now ready to lead over a billion anxious
people.
